Director Karen Cunningham’s first job out of her new production company Pop-Up Films, a spot for the Young Director’s Award, is a cracker. Cunningham, who won a YDA first prize award in 2008, has perfectly brought BETC Paris creative Damien Bellon’s amusing script to life with wonderful casting and timing.
The film marks a record year for the CFP-E/SHOTS Young Directors Award in terms of entries received and standards reached. “Members of the CFP-E are still viewing the entries for the shortlist,” said YDA president Francois Chilot, “but there is a lot of exceptional work from film students and new directors this year. It’s so exciting to come across so many new ideas and excellent film making from the next generation of directors.”
The YDA is the only international award which promotes truly new directors with films being from a director’s first four pieces of work. The Young Directors Award was launched by the CFP-E 14 years ago to embrace the producer’s role of discovering, promoting and nurturing young talents. “Although we include a lot of spec spots and work from unsigned directors, the show is a reminder that the producer’s role is essential in developing tomorrow’s great directors,” says Chilot.
The YDA which has a new venue for its show in Cannes this year at the Espace Miramar (at the corner of La Croisette/Rue Pasteur). It will be held on Thursday June 21st at 5pm. So please join us as we discover and reward the next generation of directing
